Reprocessing of PPE Garments for re-use by clinical staff – Vaporised Hydrogen Peroxide method

“The results demonstrate that a 6 log reduction of bacterial cells is achievable using a wash, dry and VHP cycle. The culture results demonstrate that all inoculated bacterial concentrations were eliminated using this method.”

University Hospital Southampton

Background

Within the context of PPE shortages during the coronavirus pandemic, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust tested the feasibility of reprocessing used garments.

Method

Inivos’ process of vaporised hydrogen peroxide (VHP) was applied to laundered garments, to test its effectiveness in decontaminating single-use PPE items for re-use.

Result

The process achieved satisfactory standards of disinfection, using organisms considered, on current data, to be worst-case surrogates for SARS-CoV-2
